Aspe Street Guerrilla

By Miel Van Opstal

Pieter Aspe, a Flemish writer of thriller novels, has seen his scenarios being turned into a tv series which became quite a success. VTM, one of the commercial TV stations in Flanders is starting a new season of Aspe’s stories. To communicate the launch of that series, on various places in Antwerp body markings were painted on the pavement. In those markings, the text reads “Aspe is terug, maandag 21.40 bij VTM” which (translated) means: “Aspe is back, monday 21.40 at VTM”. Typically for a guerrilla action of this kind, it’s not really original but it sure is being noticed by all passers-by. Spraying things on the ground is ‘hot hot hot’ in Belgium, as previously stated on this blog (here for ‘Durex’, here for ‘De Morgen’), but it also raises the discussion again about ‘urban spam’. If it was painted in front of my house, I woudn’t be happy. But seeing it somewhere else, I like it a little. Leaves us with the question if the city will track down the agency and ask them to kindly remove what they have soiled. If this was America, somebody would’ve sued already.

Perhaps its a cultural thing but, as a marketer I see the value, as a human experience I hate it and likely would feel compelled to speak out against it. Can you spell bad WOM?

At this moment at the Kammestraat (Antwerp) you can see “LOST”, “Aspe” and another unreable brand sprayed on top over each other :)
