Zidane

By Miel Van Opstal

Cunsomer-generated humor mixed with Citizen Journalism:

Wham! Zidane uses his head on Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup Final - Italy vs France, 9th July 2006

(Set up, photographed and loaded to Flickr within 15 minutes of the incident :-) )

When I set this picture up I never knew this (copied from Zidane’s Wikipedia entry):

“Zidane was sponsored by LEGO for a while and wore their logo. He was the official endorser of their Soccer/Football line, and was also immortalised in plastic in the form of a LEGO minifigure of himself, available in several of the sets.”

This is exactly how it went. I can’t wait to hear what really happened. Zidane is said to make a statement in the next couple of days.

Zidane Sets Things Straight.

Seeing this compilation of ‘the art of Materazzi’ or this one, I can only imagine Zidane was getting pretty fed up of this childish behavior. And then you get what’s coming to you. If you have absolutely no idea what the fuzz is all about: check this clip. Then I ask you: how would you feel if someone was groping you all up? And knowing the Italians never actually won a match ‘clean’ but always with dirty tricks and irritating backtalk and provocation, I can imagine the sissy just made Zidane snap.

Agreed, a player of his greatness shouldn’t have let himself go during the game. He should’ve waited ’til after the match and hit that stupid Materazzi on the head with the trophy.

UPDATE: 11:41 AM/ Speculations and lip-reading:

The answer, it has emerged, was a vile stream of racial and personal abuse.

First Marco Matterazzi called the French star the Italian equivalent of ‘n*****’, and then insulted both his mother and his Muslim background by saying he is the ’son of a terrorist whore.

Materazzi’s Lego replica looks to be expressing a bit of “Hm, why is he looking down there?” But in all seriousness, Zidane’s fuse bust was untimely if not inexcusable. Edging into shootout, walk it off and draw blood later.

The groping wasn’t the trigger. That sort of contact is common practice. It is Materazzi’s comments we are anxiously awaiting word of and has now been subject to lip-reading analysis. Oy.
